DOD Overdrive Preamp 250 Review by Ryan ‘Fluff’ Bruce

DOD Overdrive Preamp 250 Review by Ryan ‘Fluff’ Bruce

There’s no more beloved and passionate YouTuber than Ryan “Fluff” Bruce and his channel “Riffs, Beards and Gear” for us to send the newest reissue of the historical DOD Preamp 250. Ryan’s well-known love for classic gear and adapting them to modern guitarists makes him the perfect pair of hands and ears to put the pedal to the test.

Overdrive opened the gate for blues to turn into rock in the ’60s, and the 250 was one of the first, in Ryan’s words ”problem solvers” that would push clean amps into an edge-of-breakup sound at a much lower volume than typically needed.

“This (the 250) is particularly good for single coils, Marshall, and things of this nature.”

In those lines, he first touches upon the particular sweet-sounding nature and how the pedal doesn’t cut the low end, rather keeping it intact and unspoiled.

As a pro player, Ryan follows the words with a finely mixed track using a Lep Paul, Vintage Dual Rectifier, and the DOD preamp, following it up with a raw guitar-only demonstration of how versatile the simple two-knobs pedal can be.

“This is definitely more modern levels if that’s what you’re looking for.”

To fit today’s needs, the reissue features a blue LED light, a standard 9v for the board, and more output for all humbucker users that want to go from crunchy to fuzzy in one turn of a knob.

Ryan ends the review on a high note, calling out all tube screamer and classic distortion lovers to take advantage of the unique nature of this at first deceivingly small and affordable pedal.

“It’s just something a little different; it has its own unique flavor; it always has.”
