WINTER NAMM SHOW, ANAHEIM, CA, January 19, 2006 — On Friday January 20th, during the 2006 Winter NAMM Session, a panel of music industry celebrities will help commemorate the 35th anniversary of Electric Lady Studios — the House that Hendrix Built. This historic gathering is sponsored by NAMM and the Harman Professional Group, makers of the acclaimed DigiTech® Jimi Hendrix Experience™ effects pedal and parent company of leading brands JBL, Lexicon, dbx, BSS, Crown, Soundcraft, Studer, AKG and HiQnet™. The event will run from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Anaheim Marriott Hotel, in direct proximity to the Anaheim Convention Center entrance, in Salon F.
The panel, a version of which also took place during the Audio Engineering Society Convention in New York last November, brings together key people in the life and career of Jimi Hendrix and the history of New York City’s Electric Lady Studios. Eddie Kramer, known for his brilliant engineering work with Led Zeppelin, was Electric Lady’s Director of Engineering from 1970 to 1974 and during that time produced and engineered records there for artists including Jimi Hendrix, Peter Frampton and David Bowie. For noted studio designer, architect and acoustician John Storyk (Walters-Storyk Design Group), Electric Lady was the first of scores of legendary recording facilities he went on to design. Producer Bob Margouleff worked at Electric Lady often and recorded several Stevie Wonder classics there. Al Kooper, producer of Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Tubes and session musician extraordinaire (including recordings with Hendrix), played on numerous sessions at Electric Lady Studios. Engineer/producer Michael Frondelli, who collaborated with artists including Crowded House and Billy Idol, began his career at the studio as an assistant engineer on sessions for KISS, Ian Hunter and others. The panel will be moderated by Dan Daley, a leading journalist and author who covers the entertainment technology industry.
Jimi Hendrix often sat in at the Generation Club on West 8th Street, and when the nightspot closed in 1968, Hendrix manager Mike Jeffrey suggested Hendrix invest in another club on the site. The plans quickly changed and a studio, Electric Ladyland, opened there in 1970. Sadly, Hendrix would live only long enough to record a few sessions there, but to this day many of his own touches, such as the curved wall in Studio A, porthole windows and mood-change lighting system, remain in place.
“There is so much history in that place and this panel is an opportunity to see that legacy very much alive again,” says Eddie Kramer, whose talent was also crucial in making the DigiTech Jimi Hendrix Experience effects pedal as incredibly accurate as it is. “Electric Lady was more than a studio — it was and continues to be the, embodiment of Jimi’s soul and spirit. And thanks to DigiTech and Harman Professional, we have the chance to recreate a momentous time in music history in front of an appreciative audience here in Anaheim. I know Jimi would have loved it.”
Commenting on the event, Buzz Goodwin Executive Vice President of Sales, Harman Music Group stated, “The Harman Pro companies are extremely proud to sponsor this event in association with NAMM and pay tribute to the incredible rich legacy of Jimi Hendrix and Electric Lady Studios.”
The event takes place Friday January 20th from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Anaheim Marriott Hotel, next to the Anaheim Convention Center entrance, in Salon F.
